I have a friend working on a thesis about Alice In Wonderland, so when I saw this coloring book I knew it would be a perfect birthday gift! The artist/author, Amy Shen, gave the story a modern twist, and I’m really drawn to the zentangle-esque design of the drawings.

Wonderland: A Coloring Book Inspired by Alice’s Adventures Paperback*”  by Amy Shen is 76 pages long, made up of coloring and activity pages. There are bits of text interspersed throughout the chapters, referencing the original story.

The bulk of the pages were traditional ‘coloring’ pages with full illustrations, although there were some with more white space for sketching.

I think the Cheshire Cat was my favorite! Isn’t he delightful?

Since I was giving it as a gift, I photo-copied a page out to color. I used traditional colored pencils* to fill it in – I’m drawn to some of the pens and markers but intimidated by the potential smearing. If you have tried some that you like, please leave a comment letting me know what brand!

I gave it to her with a quilted pencil pouch made with Wonderland fabric, what a great pairing!

diy shrinky dink zipper pull

A little touch I added, a custom zipper pull! I traced the coloring page on some shrinky-dink paper* and then baked it, I love how it turned out. I think the illustrations in this book would lend themselves easily to embroidery, applique, or stenciling.

“Wonderland” is a quirky adult coloring book that adds its own spin on the classic Alice in Wonderland story. The activity and sketch prompts aren’t my style, I’d rather just color in pretty pictures, but they add a unique element to the book. It would make a lovely gift for a tween or a teen – and it pairs really nicely with zipper pouches.

This was the first time I’ve colored an “adult” coloring book and it was fun, I’ll definitely be looking for some more when it gets closer to the holidays.
