English paper piecing is so fun! Super portable and cheap to try; you hand sew geometric shapes. There are loads of tutorials online but if you’d prefer something to leaf through and carry along with you, I have a short list of fun modern books on english paper piecing! Perfect for unplugging and learning more about EPP, sewing books are my favorite.

Here are some of my favorite supplies & things I want to try for english paper piecing:

• Fussy cut templates! See where you’re cutting using these acrylic shapes.
• Pre-cut pieces; buy them or DIY them with a handy punch and recycled card stock.
• I have always sewn by hand but I have heard great things about this glue pen and want to try it.
• These sharp/skinny needles for hand sewing.

Learn How to English Paper Piece by Carolina Moore with Nancy’s Notions!

I was sent a free copy of the book but all opinions are my own. This is thinner than a traditional book, with the width/weight of a magazine. It is a project focused book, with 2 pages of “getting started” tips and photos at the front. A huge advantage of this book is that it is in the same style of blog tutorials, with photos for each step, as opposed to traditional books that have text directions.

I made a dream catcher! Super quick to sew, and my kids were delighted. This would be a great way to use up random hexies, and the book has a more complex version as well.

All Points Patchwork: English Paper Piecing beyond the Hexagon for Quilts & Small Projects by Diane Gilleland

I love this book! You can see more pictures of what it looks like inside and read a full review here. It focuses more on patterns & shapes instead of project tutorials.

The New Hexagon: 52 Blocks to English Paper Piece by Katja Marek

This book has 52 different blocks to make, which is a lot of hand sewing! I’d love to see a quilt sewn up from all of those, super scrappy.

Flossie Teacakes’ Guide to English Paper Piecing: Exploring the Fussy-Cut World of Precision Patchwork by Florence Knapp

I haven’t seen this one in person, but it sounds unique in that stories about EPP, its history, and profiles of modern EPP’ers are included! The reviews are glowing. I don’t see any specific projects in the table of contents but it says it includes patterns and tips for sewing EPP rosettes.

Quilting on the Go: English Paper Piecing Projects You Can Take Anywhere by Jessica Alexandrakis

With 10 projects & 10 quilts, this book is project heavy. Focusing on EPP projects that are easy to travel with, it sounds like it covers all the basics and gets good reviews.

This caught my eye because it has so many projects! I will forewarn that some of the reviews say the text is hard to read, but I’d be willing to suffer through and try some of these pretty shapes.
