DIY Gifts: Only Hearts Club Doll Clothes

Only Hearts Club Doll Clothes - Swoodson Says

Do you have any young ones in your life that play with dolls? Those tiny clothes are crazy expensive!! My twin nieces who are 7 love these dolls, but the outfits in stores were $14.99 a pop. Yikes. A search for Only Hearts Club Doll tutorials and free Only Hearts Club patterns did not turn up much, but thankfully a random bulletin board clued me in to the fact that Blythe doll clothes fit Only Hearts Club dolls! Here is some visual inspiration, links, and my own pattern I used for the leggings.

This was a perfect project to use up fabric scraps and random embellishments/buttons. It’s a Christmas present, so I can’t wait to hear how they like their new outfits! I didn’t take any detailed shots of my construction – but I used lots of little sew on snaps, velcro scraps, and thin elastic. Lots of the edges I just “pinked” (using pinking shears that cut the fabric on the bias at 45 degree angles so it doesn’t fray) instead of trying to sew tiny little hems.

I’ll admit that it was fun to use gaudy gems and trims! Sewing the tiny stuff on was exhausting though – so I recommend breaking this project up over a few days. Have you ever sewn doll clothes? I feel like sewing for a bigger doll would be easy after this.

*Note in the comments that Laura kindly shared that vintage Skipper doll sewing patterns also fit OHC dolls so keep your eyes peeled or raid someone’s vintage pattern stash to try it out yourself!

I loved these Only heart clothes patterns. I couldn't find the top pattern. Can you make it available again? Thanks!

Hi Ms. Leo! I am so sorry, it would appear the creator of the tank top pattern took it down. It wasn't my file, I just linked to it :( I updated the post so the link isn't confusing anyone else - my apologies!

I sew for dolls all the time, but have been led to believe that it is an aberration and that I should not admit to it. I used Skipper patterns from the 70's as a base for clothes for Only Hearts dolls last year. Fat quarters are wonderful. So are scraps.

Laura, oh my goodness why an aberration! I had a lot of fun sewing for these dolls - and what a great tip about Skipper patterns. I'm going to update the post and note that you shared that for anyone who stumbles across my post searching for OHC clothes in case they don't scroll to the comments :) Thanks!!

What a great idea to make doll clothes. We usually raid garage sales for these but by then they are in sorry shape. Think I"ll try this today with some scrap fabric. I'll let you know how it goes! (I"m new to sewing...slowly getting the hang of it!)

Oh I'm definitely learning as I go for sewing :) That is the best part about working with scraps though, I'm not so mad if it doesn't turn out. I'd love to see what you make!

Nice! My grand daughter was asking me this afternoon if I knew how to make Barbie clothes - which I do, because I made them for her mommy. :-) Yours are very cute.
