Free snowflake embroidery pattern & ornament tutorial

Free DIY embroidered snowflake ornament pattern to stitch up and gift this year! Embroidery hoop ornaments are easy and fun to make, and this snowflake embroidery design uses a simple back stitch that anyone can sew. #diychristmasornament #christmascraft

With about a month and a half left until Christmas, you have plenty of time to stitch up a few ornaments with my free DIY embroidered snowflake ornament pattern! Sewn with a simple back stitch, this would be a perfect first embroidery project for someone who has always been wanting to try it out. I added sequins and seed beads just for fun, since I had a bunch left over from this ornament that I made last year.

I designed this as a part of the 2017 Ornament Exchange & Blog Hop! This year, there are 47 amazing bloggers participating in the exchange. The rules of the challenge were simple: be partnered with a fellow blogger, create a handmade ornament for $15 or under, create a tutorial, and ship the ornament off to a new home.

I was partnered with Shirley, who blogs at Intelligent Domestications and has participated in the ornament swap in the past. I checked out the ornaments she made for other people and aimed for a similar style, making something that read as classic Christmas but still had some of my favorite things (wool felt, embroidery, sequins!).

It seems like every winter I’m drawn to making a snowflake project (last year it was this reverse applique pincushion!), but after the first fluffy snow in Iowa, I’m already counting down until spring. The simple lines and symmetry make snowflake embroidery really relaxing and perfect for sitting under a blanket.

I tried out two different color felts and kept the brighter green ornament for myself! I can see a whole garland of these in bright colors, draped over a mantel.

Hopefully she likes it as much as I do! Keep reading to see how to make one for yourself! I am loving these little embroidery hoops for ornaments, you can see what I’ve made with them so far: an embroidered family portrait and a snow globe photo shaker.

Ornament tutorial & snowflake embroidery pattern

Supplies

Steps

Step 1- Fit your felt into the hoop and tighten it, aiming for somewhat even edges all around. Transfer the pattern over, there are several methods for doing so, but my favorite is Fabri-Solvy! You can see a tutorial for how to use Fabri-Solvy but it’s very simple. Use a simple back stitch and follow the pattern.

Step 2- Add seed beads and sequins! First you come up through the bottom, with the seed bead on top of the sequin, and then sneak back down through the sequin’s opening, tie a knot on the other side.

Step 3- Now is a good time to take your felt off and stain your hoop if you’re going to, I like the darker wood look!

Step 4- Re center and snug up your embroidered felt, and then trim away any excess, leaving about 1/4″ of extra around the hoop. Tuck this down around and hot glue it to secure.

Step 5- Cut out a felt circle from your other piece and hot glue it on the back, covering up the messy inside! Tie a ribbon on it to hang and you’re done!
