Free Embroidery Pattern for Parents

I try hard to only choose sponsored posts that are a good fit with things I would normally buy or enjoy, but the timing for this post was uncanny. My son’s first day of preschool did not go as smoothly as I’d hoped, and I found myself wandering to the nearest grocery store with my daughter, checking my phone every five minutes to see if it was time to pick him up yet. I don’t drink coffee and try to avoid soda so I grabbed a Kiwi Strawberry Snapple® to treat myself in the car – it’s a tasty break in my afternoon that brightens my mood.

Fortunately, it is rare that I have such a rough day that I need to go buy one in the middle of the day, but I do frequently grab one when out shopping and then save it for once the kids are in bed. I curl up on the couch with a fun movie or show and something creative in my lap, drink by my side. Making something with my hands relaxes me and feels rewarding after a day of picking up/refereeing on repeat. I thought I’d share a free embroidery pattern for one of my parenting mantras – so I got to relax while I made it and also hope that it will help me relax during the day!

These mega size bottles are on Rollback at Walmart, $1.50 instead of $1.98. I bought two, just in case this pattern took me longer than I anticipated and I needed an additional break. Best business purchase ever.

I love staying at home with my kids, and never planned on anything different, but that doesn’t change the fact that there are lots of hard moments. I don’t remember where I first read this phrase, but it really stuck with me. Already, it seems like forever ago that I was balancing the needs of a newborn with a toddler – and now I have a toddler with a preschooler.

I marvel at people who say they don’t have hobbies, because I genuinely believe crafts keep me sane. If you’ve never embroidered before, this is a great pattern for you to try because it’s just a simple back-stitch! There are stitches that make curves prettier, but I wanted to keep this super simple and brainless, perfect for relaxing.

How to make a simple embroidery wall hanging

Supplies

• 6″ or 8″ embroidery hoop
• Lightweight iron-on interfacing
• Fabri-solvy or other pattern transfer method
• Embroidery needle
• Dark grey & dark green embroidery floss
• Iron
• Hot glue gun
• 8″ square of felt
• 12″ square of quilting cotton or linen/canvas
• Scissors

Steps

1- Cut out a circle of interfacing roughly the size of your hoop and press it on, centered, to the back of the main fabric. You can see it outlining the hoop here.

2- Transfer your pattern! If you’re using light fabric, you can just trace it over a window, but I use Fabri-solvy ( if you want a closer look at how it works visit this post). Place it in the hoop and center, tighten the screw as much as possible.

3. Stitch! I used a simple backstitch for the entire project, and 3 strands of floss. Next, take the fabric out and carefully press around your stitches with an iron, put back in the hoop and trim a neat circle around, leaving about 1.5″-2″ overlap around each side. You’ll carefully fold that down and hot glue it in place, continuing around the entire circle.

4. Cut a circle from the felt, roughly the size of the inner hoop circle, and carefully hot glue it on the back, around the edges, concealing all the stitches from the back. Hang it up and enjoy!
