Greenwood Tank – Remix The Stitch with Straight Stitch Designs!

To celebrate the 1 year anniversary of Straight Stitch Designs, Kimberly has organized a fun blog tour called “Remix The Stitch” and I’m joining in! I’m no stranger to Kimberly’s designs – I love the Laurelhurst Wrap so I was excited to get my hands on the Greenwood tank. I added a nursing twist, I love how it turned out!

Can you believe how big my little girl is?! She is just 6 months and that’s a store bought 12-18 romper. She was so not amused with my faux-nursing photo shoot. I’m all for normalizing breastfeeding and nursing in public, but she basically will only eat if she’s alone in a quiet, dark room. Babies!

Still, it’s nice to have clothes that make nursing quick and easy. I rounded up a bunch of PDF sewing patterns and tutorials for nursing clothes (see them here) and lots of the “hacks” involve just slicing the bodice and adding some elastic. There isn’t anything wrong with that – but I don’t love the “I AM A NURSING TOP” look it screams and I feel like the elastic would get stretched out. I thought I’d try another style and hack the Greenwood Tank*.

First, some details about the pattern itself. It’s a simple, classic tank top with a nice flipped over ribbed finishing technique. You can do a low or high back, and as with all her patterns there is an easy lengthen/shorten line. I shortened the straps a bit (too much, once I added the second layer I found), added two inches of length, and added a little drape to the front. I used a size 4 shoulder blended out to a 6 bust and 10 waist – my measurements were 35″/30″/37″ at the time of making (I’m shrinking, finally, yay! You can see some of my postpartum sewing reflections and measurements from 3 months ago here).

I am not thrilled with the final product – I am never using ribbed knit for anything but cuffs again! The hem looked great until I hung it overnight and the weight of the fabric seems to have made it a little wavy. I plan on making a second version with a few tweaks and sharing the tutorial soon – but basically I created a half-bodice piece and sewed it to the back piece, then added a front bodice piece with snaps at the straps.

I attempted to add a little drape to glide over my lumps and bumps, after seeing it referenced on Ginger Made. I am happy with the looser fit! I think it would be more dramatic if I hadn’t also added length, but I want my bum covered 🙂
