How to Embroider a Modern Heart Sachet

Sharing is caring!

Looking for something to sew for Valentine's Day? Embroider up this pretty sachet and tuck it in a drawer or pocket!

I initially shared this free sachet sewing tutorial on the Seams & Scissors blog, as a gift idea to sew for Valentine’s Day. I sent the scented heart to my Mom, who has a February birthday, with the thought that it would sweetly scent one of her fabric bins! It’s a mix of embroidery and sewing, with simple stitches and lines. I went for a modern look, it’s all straight lines with french knots marking out ‘love’ in a subtle way. You could add your own embroidery design on the heart or leave it plain, this is a tutorial you can make as complicated or simple as you’d like!

The geometric lines are inspired by a squirrel embroidery I stitched from a Mollie Makes book. I show it in a drawer but you could easily slip in a ribbon and hang it in your closet or your car.stitch detail

How to embroider a heart sachet

Supplies:

  • 1 12 X 18” sheet of red wool blend felt*
  • Transfer medium/method for the embroidery pattern (I used Fabri-Solvy*, check out this post for more info on it!)
  • White perle cotton* or embroidery floss
  • Embroidery needle
  • Scissors
  • Rice & essential oil*, or potpourri
  • PDF pattern –sign up for my newsletter and get the free download once you confirm your subscription! If you’re already a subscriber, you can access the pattern with the password in each newsletter, in the resource library.

    Steps:

    step 1

    1. Transfer the pattern over to the felt with your preferred method. The outer line is for cutting once finished, the rest can be stitched with a simple backstitch. The dots outlining the letters are French knots.

    step 2

    1. Use the heart to cut out a second, matching shape from the felt and sew wrong sides together with ¼” seam allowance, leaving a 2” gap. Fill with potpourri or rice – I used lavender essential oil to scent some rice.

    step 3

    1. Sew to close the gap you left for filling and enjoy!
