How To Make a Phone Cord Weight

How to make a phone cord weight - a simple sew, it keeps your phone's charging cord from falling down in the middle of the night. Perfect stocking stuffer! Swoodsonsays.com

Every night I creep in and silently slide into bed, trying to make as little noise as possible. Our daughter’s crib is in our room because we are terrified of disrupting our son’s sleep (their rooms are next to each other), and inevitably a few nights a week I accidentally drop my charging cord or knock something over trying to find it. Even worse, when she wakes in the middle of the night and I want some entertainment while nursing, my charging cord snakes down and I’m too sleepy to sit up and find it so I end up with a dead phone in the morning. Last Fall, I saw this nifty charging cord advertised and started thinking about a DIY version; I am so thrilled with how it turned out!

This is a super easy sew, it’s just 2 squares and a rectangle. I’ve used this same basic construction with larger squares to make a door stop, pattern weights, and a pincushion – it is versatile! These are great scrapbusters and would be a great tech gift to sew, or use as a stocking stuffer.

I wish I could tell you the fabric – it’s a cheery print from a layer cake I won a long time ago; please let me know if you recognize it!

As you can see, the added velcro strap holds the charging end easily, and accommodates any type of charger.

Supplies

Steps

Cut (2) 4″ X 4″ squares & (1) 3″X4″ rectangle. Cut (1) 1.5″ long piece of Velcro

Step 1

step 1

Fold the rectangle in half length-wise, wrong sides together (WST), press.

Step 2

step 2Open the rectangle back up, fold each long side to meet in the middle along the crease you just created, WST, press again.

Step 3

step 3

Flip over, and sew each piece of Velcro on one long side, centered and almost touching in the middle.

Step 4

step 4

Fold back in half, sew 1/8″ along each long side.

Step 5

step 5

Put both squares right sides together (RST), sew along 3 sides with 3/8″ seam allowance, and trim with pinking shears.

Step 6

step 6

Pop it open and fold back in half, matching the seams together, RST.

Step 7

step 7

Sew the bottom edge, keeping the two seams matched up,with a 3/8″ seam allowance, leaving a gap to fit your Velcro strip in and for turning. Make sure to stop and start a few times at the beginning and end of these lines especially.

Step 8

step 8

Turn your squares right side out, pulling gently through the hole you left. Gently poke out the corners and press if desired. Using a funnel or rolled up piece of paper, fill to 3/4 full with poly-pellets. You may also use beans or gravel – but I prefer something easily washable!

Step 9

step 9Don’t forget to stuff in your pinking shear scraps & thread trims! Less trash, fewer pellets needed.

Step 10

step 10

Insert the short, raw edges into the opening you left, and sew 1/8″ from the edge, securing the pellets inside. You’re done!

You can tuck the velcro strap underneath the triangle if you wish, or leave it hanging out. No more fishing for a cord in the dark!

What is the purpose of the Velcro? I’m really new at this.

it makes it so the cord doesn't slip through!

This is a great idea. I can't wait to get started, as I need to make a few! Thank you for the tutorial!

Thanks Alma! Hey I'm curious, where did you happen to see this? It is a pretty old tutorial so I was surprised to see a big spike in traffic for it, happy people are making them and leaving comments though :D

I increased the main fabric pieces to 5" because that seemed to fit bigger cell phones better. I used craft sand inside mine. Love the pattern!

That is great to know! This is an older post, in 5 years I think phones have gotten a lot bigger again haha! Glad you were happy with it :)

So why does the little tab even have to be able to open as the end of the cable that goes "into" your phone is small in order to fit the phone opening? Can't it just be a tab to hold the cable in place? After having read your tutorial, I have decided I need to make nine of them before Christmas. Gotta get busy, huh? Thanks for the ideas.

Hi Sherri! It might be covid/Christmas prep brain but I don't feel like I understand your question! I'm assuming you mean the tab with the velcro and why does it have to be open-able; it is just a tab to hold the cable in place and that is how I got it to be quasi-adjustable since everyone's chargers are different. You could maybe put like a little elastic loop or something on top instead to hold it? I'm not sure. Let me know if I can help clarify anything; but it might be where you have to make one as stated before the perfect version tweaks for you, pop into your head!

Is there something more sustainable to use rather than poly pellets that is washable? I know how messy kids can be but we only have one planet to give them and it needs our help to stay healthy. Maybe a removable cover is worth the cost of healthy oceans, healthy fish, healthy people. It's time to use our lovely creativity to give back to the earth 🌎. Everything we make comes from it and affects it. Love this idea for stocking stuffers.

Hi Luci! I appreciate that thought for sure and you taking the time to write it; since writing this post I have discovered that there are glass beads that are similar and have switched over to those, I'll add that into the post tonight as an update. I don't think a removable cover works well on this shape. I agree that minimizing individual plastic consumption is important and am always trying to remain open minded about my crafts and reducing my own BUT I also want to make sure you (and maybe you already do) and anyone else reading is aware of how pressure needs to be applied at a legislative and manufacturer level more than anything an individual can do (which is not to say we can't do both). Here is an article I read that I thought was important on the topic, overall! https://theintercept.com/2019/07/20/plastics-industry-plastic-recycling/
