Superhero Doll & Matching Toddler Cape — Stitch Swap

Sharing is caring!

Handmade doll with a matching cape set? Check! I got a little carried away with this project but I love how it turned out. I doubled up on sewing events with this little guy, linking up the softie to the Peanut Baby sew along and the cape is my contribution for Stitch Swap! Stitch Swap is a fun collaboration where a group of bloggers mailed a yard of fabric to one another. Fenna from Fabulous Home Sewn sent me this cheery star print and I turned it into a superhero set.

{I now have a free pattern for the toy superhero cape, find it here!}

This was the first time my son has worn a cape, and he seemed to like how it twirled as he ran! I used the free superhero cape pattern* from Peekaboo Patterns, in the 2t size. I couldn’t find another fabric in my stash that coordinated, so I left it single layered and finished the edges with single fold bias tape.

I’m going to be honest with you – he had little interest in the doll! I’m hoping he is more entertained by it inside – the allure of rocks and trees is too much to compete with a superhero.

The softie is from the (free!) Peanut Baby pattern by Imagine Gnats for Jo-ann Fabric.

I spent a silly amount of time machine stitching pants details and hand embroidering the face – his body is made from an upcycled pair of pants and the top is from an upcycled t-shirt carcass (initially used to make shorts for a friend’s son!).

One more for good measure! Please ignore where the hair doesn’t match up on that side. Oops!

You can see more peanut babies on Abby Glassenberg Design’s Facebook page & all the other Stitch Swap bloggers below! It’s a whole week of projects made with surprise fabric – I can’t wait to see what everyone made. I sent fabric to Roxanne from Pensebrox – can’t wait until Friday to see what she created.
