Kid’s Briefcase Sewing Pattern

Sharing is caring!

Just Like Papa Briefcase

Looking for a fun, versatile kid’s briefcase sewing pattern for the kids in your life? Check out the ‘Just Like Papa Briefcase’ – the first pattern from Momma Quail Patterns. It has a crayon or pen organizer, zipper pouch for craft supplies, and a book pocket. This would make the perfect craft fair item or gift – tons of room for personalization with applique, fabric choice, and then of course the book & supplies you put inside.

Toy Briefcase

I used a medium-weight denim for the outer fabric and then white canvas and quilting cotton inside. Unlike the crayon tote I made from a sewing book, this pocket is big enough to hold a coloring book (yay!)

Crayon Briefcase

This was my first sewing project after having had my baby 3 weeks previous, so my seriously sleep-deprived self was a little intimidated at diving in with vinyl, zippers, and multiple layers. Have no fear! The instructions are awesome.

Shown in comparison to my son – he is wearing 3/4T clothes.  I think this would be a good size for older kids too.

What I changed:

The only thing I changed was topstitching the outer & inner layers separately – I initially did them all at once like the pattern says but it looked really messy on the bottom layer, because I didn’t have my ‘nice’ machine with a walking foot. Topstitching isn’t my strong suit.

Highlights:

  • I normally prefer photographs to pattern diagrams, but Amy did something brilliant and put the color key for each diagram’s color on the top of each page. This was so helpful! Even when the diagrams only have 2 different colors or shadings, I always forget which is which and have to scroll up.
  • It looks like a way more complicated sew than it actually is – always good.
  • Super versatile – this would be adorable with different pocket configurations to make a travel/make-up bag. Add little purse feet and you have a boxy bag! It could go lots of different directions.

Sometimes it can seem like the only things on Pinterest are ruffle dresses and precious, pig-tailed dolls; I think Sewing With Boys is a great idea and I’m excited to see what they do next!

Love, love, love!! It's such a relief to hear that you found it a fairly easy sew - I've been worried about it being too complicated!! Thank you so much for joining in the tour :)

I wish I carved out more time for sewing. I have so many projects I want to do for my little (now) girl!

Aww how old is she? I actually am working on a post about finding time to sew with kids at home. It is tough! Most days I just want to sit on the couch when I have free time, but I'm always glad when I sew instead.
