13+ free bag patterns to download and sew – a curated list of PDF patterns for bags
Bags are a fun sewing project because they don’t require any fit adjustments, are usually done in a weekend, and can be used immediately! Lots of bag pattern designers offer a free pattern or two to give people a taste of their work; I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorites that I want to try out myself!
I compiled this list with plans to use up some of my upcycle materials testing some of them out – picture these patterns sewn up in upcycled denim, a quilt, interfaced tshirts, or old button-up shirts. Don’t forget that you can stamp, screenprint, tie dye, or add patches on to any bag to jazz it up, too!

A modern duffle bag tutorial with great reviews, I like the piping details.
A modern twist on a typical sling backpack, I think the details on this bag are so good.
An updated tote with fancy handles and subtle curves.
A cozy bag with two handle options, it looks really handy.
A classic satchel tutorial, with a cute little accent fabric strip on the front panel.
An updated twist on a traditional tote, I would use this to carry all the things.
A slightly elevated basic backpack that shows off multiple prints.
A unique small purse with pretty details, this would be perfect for upcycling leather.
A larger duffle bag with classic lines and bonus pockets.
