A list of Asheville area sewing & fabric resources including local pattern designers, quilt shops, fabric stores, and sewing machine dealers
We’ve lived in Asheville for several years and I’ve been meaning to make a list of area fabric stores, pattern designers, sewing classes, and other textile related resources since we moved here! With several little towns that aren’t terribly far away, it can be tricky to find things even if they are close by. My hope is also that when folks come to the area and visit our waterfalls or Biltmore, they can pop in to a local quilt shop and support them more easily too! I know some will take issue with me titling this “Asheville area” when western North Carolina would be more fitting but in my experience that’s what people tend to call the entire region.
Some of these resources have brick & mortar stores that you can go and visit, some have infrequent open houses, and some operate online only. There is a map at the bottom of the post with all of the places that are regularly open to the public; please leave a comment if you know of another local fabric/sewing related resource that I can add!
While this post will remain evergreen and was already in my drafts, I was compelled to finish it quickly in the wake of Hurricane Helen 2024. At the time of this post, 2 weeks after the disaster, thousands still have no power, no water, no wifi, etc. right at the beginning of the busiest shopping time of the year. Many of these stores are still able to ship tangible goods but others may only have digital/PDF options at this time. Regardless, I hope you can do some holiday shopping early and support these makers now! Shopping directly on the shop’s website, if they have it, will always give the creator more funds. However, I know sometimes folks have gift cards or are more comfortable on Etsy so I have linked both options when applicable.

I did not include ‘big box stores’ in my list but have them on the map for locals who might be looking for Halloween fabric or something like that!

A Weaverville local quilt shop & fabric store that sells sewing machines and runs classes. This is where I bought my current machine! When I visited, they also had some higher quality apparel cotton knit fabric.
ARTeries Fashion Sewing School
An Asheville sewing teacher who runs classes for adults and kids.

A Black Mountain yarn shop focused on fiber but they have a small amount of high quality fabric as well.
Cozy Blue Handmade
An Asheville hand embroidery pattern designer that sells patterns & kits. I have stitched several of her patterns and they’re a delight – don’t miss her mail club with new surprise patterns in the mail too!
