There are all sorts of cozy Fall fabric & goodies at JOANN right now, and I’m excited to share that I’m collaborating with them to share this project! That means they compensated me for my materials and my time, but of course I only share products & stores that I already use and love, and all opinions are my own. I chose to highlight their affordable snuggle flannel in a simple DIY floor cushion tutorial.

My kids have always loved pillows and blankets but have outgrown the sitting poufs I made them when they were toddlers (they were adorable little log slice poufs). As Fall weather settles in, I decided to use a cozy flannel and make a larger set that they will be able to enjoy for years!

This fabric is super soft and cuddle-worthy, they could not keep their hands off of it while I was working. Sewing on a leather handle only takes a minute but adds a fun accent, and they love dragging the pillows around.

Floor pillows are a huge hit in our house because we use them when we’re reading, playing board games, or watching movies. Sometimes they become parts of a fort, a cave, or a mountain too!

I couldn’t resist these floral woodland animals, they feel like fall to me with a cheery twist. I don’t do a ton of orange or brown in my house, so this was a perfect mix. You’ll end up with left over flannel fabric, so check out this list of flannel projects to sew and stay busy!

It’s hard to stop at two, I’m tempted to sew a huge stack of them before winter comes!

If you have trouble picturing such a funky print in your house, I sewed up a quilted, solid color one too. These look super sophisticated to me, but equally cozy.

I even busted out a subtle pumpkin from JOANN too; now that our new house has a proper mantel, I have more decorating to do!

DIY floor cushion tutorial

Supplies for 1 pillow:

• 27″ floor pillow insert
• 2 yards snuggle flannel per pillow + 1 additional yard if doing the quilted option PREWASH YOUR FABRIC! 100% cotton, it will experience some shrinkage.
• Turquoise leather or brown leather
• 20-22″ inch invisible zipper (optional)
• Pinking shears
• Iron
• Washi tape
• Ruler
• Leather needles

Steps

Step 1- If you want to do the quilted option, scroll to the bottom and do step 1a & step 1b before picking up here. Cut (2) 28″ squares of your flannel. Flannel tends to fray so I chose to serge all the edges, you could also use pinking shears or a zigzag stitch! If you don’t anticipate washing them often, this step isn’t crucial, but my kids are.. messy.

Step 2– Time for an invisible zipper! This is optional; I prefer covers that I can take on and off in case they need to be washed, but if you’d prefer to skip this step, you can simple sew a 1/2″ allowance all the way around the square, leaving a 4″ gap to turn it right side out, and then hand sew closed.

Make sure that your fabric print is facing the right direction if it is directional like mine! I wanted all the animals to be facing right side up. If you aren’t familiar with inserting invisible zippers, the packaging has great instructions or Maris has a good tutorial. Sew it on to both panels, and then zip it halfway open before proceeding.

Step 3- To cut a leather handle, cut a rectangle 1 1/8″ wide and 7″ long.

Step 4- Center your handle on the top edge opposite the invisible zipper edge, and use washi tape to secure it, leaving a 1″ gap at each end, and position it roughly 1″ below the raw edge.

Step 5- Sew in an x-box formation, making sure to stitch back and forth a few times when stopping and starting the seams, this will keep it nice and secure.

Step 6– Double checking that the zipper is half open, pin or clip the two square right sides together. Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance all the way around, until you hit the zipper on both sides.

Step 7– Use pinking shears to clip off the excess of each corner, ensuring not to clip through the stitching.

Step 8- Press all the seams open from the inside.

Step 9- Turn right side out through the zipper and gently poke the corners out (I used a crochet hook). Press the seams again, keeping them crisp.

Step 10- Insert the pillow form, zip closed, and enjoy! If desired, you could stuff the corners fuller with extra poly-fil.

Want to make a quilted version? Do these 2 steps before follow steps 1-10 above!

Step 1a: Cut (2) roughly 30″ squares from flannel, and then use painter’s tape or chalk to mark the diagonal line. Sew along this line, remove tape.

Step 1b: Sew an equidistant amount from the original line all the way to the right, flip around and repeat on the other side until the entire square is quilted.
